Förderjahr 2023 / Projekt Call #18 / ProjektID: 6899 / Projekt: ARTverse
ARTverse is an exploratory research project that aims to develop a platform for creating, teaching and exhibiting art natively in Virtual Reality. We are using VRChat as a platform to develop and test the toolkits.
Collective Mind Map
For a better result, we started collecting examples, ideas about the potential of the technology, and also unsuccessful attempts to use Virtual Reality to create, teach or exhibit art. Most importantly, we need to know what kind of tools, resources, or solutions are needed to explore VR as a medium for creativity. We invited other artists and researchers to collaborate on a Mural Board to share their thoughts and experiences. The result of this collaborative mind map can be found in this link:
Discussion with art students
A project presentation and discussion with students took place on 04.06.2024 at the University dieAngewandte. The students were able to try out the first demo version of our VR Chat Space for Creation and give us feedback on how they perceive the potential of VR for visual arts.
First results
A VR chat solution for creating and sharing digital art has been implemented and tested. A Github repo has been created and the code released as an open source solution. The first VRChat world includes elements for drawing, designing, playing videos, and creating a slideshow of images in VR. You can find the code for these tools in this Git repo:

Next steps
So far, we have focused on developing tools for content creation in VR. In the current phase of the project, we are in close contact with researchers from the CReA Lab at the University of Vienna to create an environment for teaching art history. We are also in contact with artists to define the basic functionalities of an interactive art exhibition in VR.
